Our fourth workshop was on advanced pre-aggregations use-cases. It was great to see a large turnout and we were again especially impressed with a lot of first-time workshop attendees (> 70%) to this event.

We began the workshop with an overview of what pre-aggregations are and what we covered in our first pre-aggregations workshop back in August. You can find links to the slides and recordings from the first workshop on the [event page](https://cube.dev/events/pre-aggregations/). 

We then jumped into the main part of the workshop by explaining how to use [non-additive vs. additive measures with pre-aggregations](https://cube.dev/docs/recipes/non-additivity#top). From there we moved on to explaining how to use pre-aggregations with large queries that span across multiple joined Cubes. The most important part of the workshop was showing how to structure and optimize pre-aggregations by using an [export bucket](https://cube.dev/docs/caching/using-pre-aggregations#pre-aggregation-build-strategies-export-bucket). All the examples had demos to illustrate the topics. Similar to previous workshops, demos were done on [Cube Cloud](https://cube.dev/cloud/), but all features discussed during the workshop are available in [the open-source version of Cube](https://github.com/cube-js/cube.js). 

After a short mid-session Q & A, we continued to talk about [refresh tuning](https://cube.dev/docs/caching/using-pre-aggregations#refresh-strategy) and how to pick the best refresh strategy for your use-case. We then moved on to the topic of [rollup-joins](https://cube.dev/docs/caching/using-pre-aggregations#joins-between-pre-aggregations) which is when you join pre-aggregation rollups instead of the Cubes themselves. Lastly, we covered [pre-aggregations best practices with multi-tenancy](https://cube.dev/docs/multitenancy-setup#scheduled-refreshes-for-pre-aggregations).

Our third workshop was on data modeling and it was great to see a large number of atteendees and we were especially impressed with a lot of first time attendees to our workshop. We began the workshop with an overview of data schema design, which is a starting point for modeling your data in Cube. Code examples were used to show ways to simplify SQL expressions in your cubes and to simplify your cubes and for reusing code. 

We then discussed data schema [versioning](https://cube.dev/docs/config#options-reference-schema-version) and [compilation](https://cube.dev/docs/schema/reference/execution-environment#context-symbols-transpile) with demos to illustrate both topics. Similar to previous workshops, demos were done on [Cube Cloud](https://cube.dev/cloud/), but all features discussed during the workshop are available in [the open-source version of Cube](https://github.com/cube-js/cube.js).

Next we showed how Cube allows schemas to be created on-the-fly using a special [asyncModule](https://cube.dev/docs/schema/advanced/dynamic-schema-creation) function. 

Another popular topic in the community is [Joins](https://cube.dev/docs/schema/fundamentals/joins) and after going over basics of Joins in Cube, there was a discussion on where to join data, directionality of joins (with a demo), and [many-to-many joins](https://cube.dev/docs/schema/fundamentals/joins#many-to-many-joins).  

Finally, there was a quick discussion on query-dependent data schema and how you shouldn't let your queries reshape your data in Cube. An example from a [recipe](https://cube.dev/docs/recipes/passing-dynamic-parameters-in-a-query) was shown to demonstrate this, and we encourage everyone to check out [other recipes including ones focused on data schema](https://cube.dev/docs/recipes#recipes-data-schema).

## Multitenancy Workshop Recap

About half of the registrants didn't have experience with multitenancy in Cube, so we spent the first part of the workshop
discussing key multitenancy concepts (for both front-end and back-end) in Cube and different configuration options
for multitenancy. As we did for the pre-aggregations workshop, we then used [Cube Cloud](https://cube.dev/cloud/) as a lab 
environment for the attendees to get hands-on experience in setting up multitenancy.

We covered the following three scenarios during the lab session: 

1. Filtering queries per tenant using `queryRewrite`. 
2. In multiple databases, using `contextToAppId` to tell which tenant is making the current request and `scheduledRefreshContexts` for building pre-aggregations for all tenants. 
3. Tenant-specific schema and dynamic `scheduledRefreshContexts`

During the hands-on session, you also got a glimpse of how key Cube features such as pre-aggregations support multitenancy. 
Although Cube Cloud was used as it provides a convenient environment for the lab, all features discussed during the workshop are 
available in [the open source version of Cube](https://github.com/cube-js/cube.js).

Recapping our Multitenancy Workshop

**Our first workshop on pre-aggregations was very well-received. So, we're happy to announce our next [workshop](https://cube.dev/events/multitenancy/) on multitenancy. We had our first Cube community event on August 18th, and I'm excited to report that
the event exceeded our expectations in many ways, including numbers of
registrations (181) and attendees (96) plus the level of interactions with the attendees.
We selected [pre-aggregations](https://cube.dev/docs/caching/using-pre-aggregations) as
the topic for our first workshop based on how frequently it is discussed on our Slack
and in our conversations with community members. So we were pretty confident that this
would be a popular topic, but the level of participation was still beyond what we expected.

Before the event, I was a little concerned that attendees may not ask many questions,
but I was proven wrong in the first 5 minutes as Q&A and Chat tabs were very active from
the beginning. It was definitely nice to see that people were engaged and asked a lot of
good questions throughout the workshop. The level of community engagement was also evident
in the post-event survey, as we heard from nearly half of the attendees. In general,
you're doing pretty well if you reach a 25% response rate on these surveys, so I'm
heartened by how many people were willing to spend the time to provide us with feedback.
In particular, there was some excellent open-ended feedback that will help us with our future events.

## Pre-Aggregations Workshop Recap

We had a good mix of beginners and experienced Cube users in the workshop, so we thought
it made sense to start off with some overview of pre-aggregations before diving into the
hands-on lab. Our soon-to-be-released [Cube Cloud](https://cube.dev/cloud/) provided a
nice lab environment for the attendees, and it was great to see many following along and
getting hands-on experience with pre-aggregations.

After a quick set up of pre-aggregations on our sample e-commerce database with about 30
million rows of data, we demonstrated the query time go down from about 9 seconds to about
0.1 seconds after pre-aggregations. We then delved into topics such as partitioning,
refresh policy, and rollup joins that you need to consider when you use pre-aggregations.
Finally, we discussed the production checklist that you can use as a reference if you are
deploying your own Cube instance.

The Q&A sessions during the workshop were extremely valuable to us as they helped guide
our discussions. In addition, many of these questions gave us a lot of good ideas on how
we can improve our documentation and provide potential topics for future
[recipes](https://cube.dev/docs/recipes) or
[tutorials](https://cube.dev/docs/examples#tutorials), so please stay tuned for some
great content coming soon.
