A semantic layer also addresses the challenges of managing multiple data sources and consumers by providing features like data modeling, access control, caching functionality, and various APIs for downstream connectivity. The result is better data consistency, improved security, and increased developer productivity.

Furthermore, the semantic layer can enhance an AI chatbot's performance, especially when it interfaces with natural language queries, by providing the LLM with well-defined API specifications and querying options.

Quantatec's Mauricio Cirelli provided insights on how they leveraged Cube's semantic layer to deploy an AI chatbot. The chatbot enhances user experience by answering user queries directly, without the need for programming or dashboard creation. This solution was a response to the challenge of generating user-specific reports––a process that was previously labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Josh Patterson of Patterson Consulting expounded on the concept of retrieval augmented generation. By retrieving relevant information from a knowledge repository and using it to augment the prompt for a large language model like GPT-3, you can get more precise results. Three layers of protection work in step to safeguard data: prevention of execution of deleted statements, a semantic layer that restricts access to data retrieval, and finally, the inherent database protection. To further ensure data security, Cube's query rewrite functionality allows user-specific data access, providing necessary security in a multi-tenancy system like Quantatech.
